behind the scenes
newborn safety is pretty important to me and because i am one of the rare few photographers in New Zealand to share photographs of newborns posed outside. I wanted to share that these were photographed safely and share a look behind the scenes. both images of babies outdoors shared are actually of my own babies!
i was excited to try some outdoor sessions of my own and had the opportunity with two of my four children. I carried baskets and props in the boot of my car for weeks incase the moment arose, as weather conditions are paramount.
my son was born in June during winter so I new that it was probably not going to happen. it turned out it did happen, living in the winterless north aka whangarei, it doesn’t get as cold despite my puffer jacket it wasn’t cold at all. i wore the puffer jacket in case i needed to tuck it around jake *baby pictured. i also had his car seat and capsule rain cover with me.
Baby Jake *pictured at our local beach amongst the sand dunes, It was a rather warm day. he was fully dressed and I had his arms out when I had him under the blanket in position. I was lucky that the wind we did have was coming behind him, so he had no wind directly on him at all. The worst part was the sandflys.. I had two of my older children on sandfly duty just watching and shooing them away from him.
Baby Cora *pictured in the grassy meadow, was a location not many would look twice at, and i’m pleased I managed to get this location to work well, with all the houses surrounding, and a lot of sparse bits of grass and gorse. With the right lighting (sunset) and equipment, it set for an amazing spot. the best part was this is our neighbouring section so handy to us. I had set up the basket inside and had my daughter fed and ready too, we didn’t have far to go being right next door. she was fully clothed in a onesie with her arms poking out aswell as wrapped. I used a wheatie bag warmed up inside, and tucked it under the layered blankets inside of the basket, this helps in two ways weighting the basket and keeping baby warm.
both sessions were photographed with the help of my partner who has helped assist me in many newborn sessions and has been dragged to many sessions as my helpful assistant so he was confident in handing babies in these poses with me.
